What Sigma 18-200mm is best?

Do I need to pay the extra few hundred dollars to get the anti shock feature in my new lense? Sigma have two lenss that are both 18-200 but one has the feature and one does not? Thanks heaps for your thoughts!

Photoace needs to price in the real world, not try to force the answer he wants with mythical pricing.

In the real world:
Canon 18-200mm IS lens: 595.00
Sigma 18-200 with OS: 399.95
Sigma 18-200mm without: $284.56

Nikon 18-200mm VR lens: 692.00
Sigma 18-200mm with OS: 417.16
Sigma 18-200mm without OS: $275.00

I happen to own a Sigma 18-200mm without OS in the Nikon mount. Overall, it’s an acceptable, but not outstanding performer. From what I understand, some improvements were made between the non-OS to OS version. So the OS (optically stabilized) version has some image quality improvements.

But the simple fact is this: OS will not make up for bad technique. If you use a tripod or properly brace your camera, you don’t need the OS at all. With flash and low ambient lighting, you don’t need the OS at all. Where OS comes into play is if you shoot in dim lighting without camera/lens support to minimize vibration, and only you can determine how often you would do this.

I checked out lots of reviews and if it were me, I’d spend the extra money and get the OS version (wasn’t available when I bought). People that have tried both all report better build quality with the OS version, as well as greatly liking the OS for handholding in difficult situations. In the real world, it’s not always possible to use good technique or carry/setup a tripod.

Bottom-line: for the Sigma, the extra $116 (for Canon) or $142 (for Nikon) is worth it.

Note: All prices were taken off amazon.com for consistency.
